All things considered, it is significant that people consider the past as they outline their way forward as to abstain from rehashing past missteps all together form a possible future, in all parts of human lives, be it social, political, or financial angles. This article centers around two diaries by two female scholars that describe past exercises that molded human fate altogether. The diaries are Wild Swan by, Jung Chang, and Testament of Youth by Vera Britain. The Wild Swan journal depicts the Cultural Revolution that occurred in China in an account that thinks about the encounters of her grandma, her mom, and hers to clarify China’s change into the advanced world. In the Testament of Youth diary, Brittain centers around the impacts of the First World War on the British white collar class residents. It further features the situation of ladies during, after th e war, and in a humane way that interests to all. The journal is given in a story way that relates the cruel encounters of Brittain that drove her into composing the diary as a method of communicating. The two diaries are significant recorded viewpoints that uncovers the past in a dazzling way and are important in taking care of current and future issues that influence humankind. Discoveries Wild swan diary by Jung Chang was first distributed in 1991, whereby, Chang takes note of that the wild swan occasion changed his life fundamentally thinking about that it’s the book that drove him into being an author. Chang had for long longed for being an essayist, however his fantasies had been subdued by the oppressive standard of Mao, which compromised the lives of numerous journalists who endured in perpetual political mistreatments. Chang’s journal is an account of three ages of the twentieth century China featuring the then Presidents Mao’s effect of his oppressive guideline in China, and addressing the encounters of females in the advanced world. Chang depicts the life of her grandma, who was a warlord courtesan; the battles that her mom experienced as a youthful optimistic socialist, and about the trials, her folks experienced during the Cultural Revolution. During the Cultural Revolution, Mao’s disappointments drove Chang’s guardians into contradicting the president’s arrangements. They were subsequently focused on along with other restricting high-positioning authorities during the upset. The scrutinizing of Mao by Chang’s father made Chang’s family be presented to counter from Mao’s supporters. This was additionally trailed by her father’s detainment, and her family had to venture out from home. This caused Chang to lose the regard she had for Mao as she composes, to the degree that when Mao kicked the bucket, she needed to conceal her head under the shoulder of another understudy to imagine that she was lamenting. Chang left to concentrate in Britain in 1978 on an administration grant, where she discovered life there fascinating to the degree that she came to adore her new nation so much, and particularly its separate culture. The distribution the primary book Wild Swan made Chang a big name because of her one of a kind style of utilizing an individual depiction of the lives of three ages of Chinese ladies as a method of featuring the numerous progressions her nation experienced that demonstrated very fruitful. The connection of these three stories begins with Chang’s grandma being sold as a courtesan to a Beijing’s police boss so as to expand her father’s force and status in their general public. Chang portrays her grandmother’s early life, her time as the mistress of a warlord, and the getaway with her infant little girl following the passing of her significant other. This was then trailed by the marriage of Chang’s mother to a respectable white collar clas s specialist, making it feasible for Chang to give a clear image of the conventional china, notwithstanding the spot of ladies in the general public before the socialist upset occurred. The confirmation of youth journal depicts the effect that the First World War had on the white collar class residents in Britain. The diary shows the effects of this war delayed into post war years, subsequently its enormous effects on the residents. The journal is further a sort of women's activist writing because of their delineation of pioneer ladies producing their way into autonomous professions on a general public that was lazily refraining of scholarly ladies. The journals start with Brittains plans of getting into Oxford University, and her affection existence with Roland Leighton, who was a companion to her sibling. The account experiences the passings of her fiancã ©e sibling and her two nearest male companions during the First World War. It closes with Brittain meeting her Husband and the resulting marriage in 1925. Brittain was left genuinely depleted and pain striken, yet in the midst of the whole injury, a thought was planted in Brittains brain of deifying her story in a book. The possibility of the book came later to be the confirmation of the adolescent, which is one of the most commended diaries of the twentieth century. The words in these journals seem to spill out of her, a solid blend of both misfortune and rage that are strengthened by insight and radical convictions. As a lady, Brittain had the option to account the female encounters in the war with an instinctual dynamism. The abstract memorialization of world war one was a save of the male until the confirmation of the young was inferred. Brittain was hence ready to offset enthusiastic reverberation with scholarly accuracy. She had the option to transfer her own story that of being the little girl of the owner of a commonplace paper production line, and afterward as a young lady in the way towards understanding the belongings that were destroyed by war. By so doing, she had the option to spread out her political convictions. As indicated by the journals, she had the option to discover that nobody can live in separation structure open occasions. Having experienced childhood in a preservationist working class family, she can compose intensely concerning her own aspirations as a methods for advancing her life and those of other ladies, regardless of the conventional thoughts by her folks that a woman’s place has a place in the home. What gives Brittain’s diaries such an extraordinary impact is the refusal by Brittain to stick on to acknowledged standards that keep on reducing the spot of a lady in the general public. The journal meshes around policy driven issues into her own life that makes Brittain’s diary so interesting. This is on the grounds that any individual doesn't need to be keen on pacifism or woman's rights to comprehend Brittain’s perspective. The amazing journal, in any case, didn't come without encountering of individual by Brittain. Despite the fact that she belived thaty she could never be discover any delight of being seeing someone, did in the long run wed George Caltin, a rationalist which following a romance that was incited by a letter. Composing of the confirmation of youth, along with its distribution influenced Brittain, yet in addition had more extensive ramifications. Her significant other needed to adapt perusing the enthusiastic nostalgic composition of his wife’s’ previous darling. The passings of her dearest companions and father constrained Brittain to bear the weight if this disaster. She thusly emptied out her energies into battling against expansionism, politically-sanctioned racial segregation, and atomic multiplication. Britttain’s political activism lastingly affected her little girl, in that; she drove the resistance against the attack of Iraq in the House of Lords in 2003. Worth Following the upheaval, the situation of ladies in the general public rose altogether with Chang’s mother being a government employee and later the spouse of an authority. Chang, subsequently, gives an authentic perspective on the impact of Mao’s rule on the way of life of customary China, just as the irregular opening of ladies in today’s world. Chang’s account is a rousing one of mental fortitude, knowledge, love, faithfulness, and affectability that is told in a target way without blame or allegations. Despite the fact that Brittain is presently dead and can't observer the achievement the journals, the effects are as yet felt even today in, for example, how her book has helped in molding the awareness of current women's activists. In a time of six years, the diaries had sold more than 120, 000 duplicates. The episode of World War II, be that as it may, implied that Brittain’s radical way of thinking turned out to be less famous. It was not until the late 1970s that the Virago, the women's activist distributer republished Testament of Youth which was trailed by a well known TV arrangement brought Brittain’s work to a greater crowd. The book up to today remains impressively compelling 8 decades after its distribution, and keeps on moving new ages. The book had the option to pass on the individual demolition that followed World War I, particularly from the point of view of a young lady who encountered the rage of war without limit. Numerous other simultaneous records del ineated ladies as casualties who bore the staggering impact of world occasions, as opposed to as the methods for their own change. Her story is a compassionate one that gives the encounters of ladies a voice thinking about that numerous other female scholars attempted to carry their records into the spotlight. Issue as an approach to describe past Utilizing the issue as a method of describing the past is that the story is inclined to be handed-off in an emotional way that centers more around the issue than on the arrangements, and the authentic parts of the story. By utilizing the issue approach technique to feature different previous chronicled occasions we are required to gain from might be one directional, in that, the creator may just view matters that by and by dangerous to him/her. In these two journals, for example, Brittain in the Testament of Youth focu

Everybody was quiet, Grant and Rene gave me wiped out smiles. Tim immediately stood up and stated, Sure, we toast his feline, and horrify him, yet what does he gain from it? and afterward Daimien barged in on, Yeah, his right, we should like leave a note or something. I thought for a second and stated, Okay, when I return home Ill think of him a note out of news paper clippings. Well leave it under his entryway tangle or something. Everybody put your stuff in my pack here and afterward marry better return to our homes. Be back here at 10:00pm today around evening time. As I was strolling home, I was thinking how clever the look on Leighs face would be the point at which I lit up that defenseless feline, and how confounded he would be the point at which he heard the words Madness incurs significant damage, if it's not too much trouble have precise change. I basically couldnt pause. At the point when I at last returned home, I experienced all the news papers and all the magazines I could discover. After about an hour I had completed the letter. At the point when I got to the recreation center at 10:00pm everybody was at that point there, sitting tight for me. It was dull and everything was quiet. Leigh just lived around the bend from the recreation center. I discovered his location from the extremely supportive Telstra administrator. At the point when we showed up at Leighs house Daimien and Tim, without saying a word bounced the fence, I followed. We found the feline sleeping on the secondary passage tangle. I snatched it rapidly and we as a whole bounced back ove r the fence. It was much simpler then we figured it would be nevertheless the subsequent I given it to Grant, it began scratching us. Rene rapidly attached it to the tree, extra close so it could scarcely relax. Award cut its hairs off and it quit scratching him. Imprint delayed as he poured the methylated spirits on it, however Trent rushed him as he saw the lights in the house turn on. I gazed at the lights for a second and afterward murmured, You folks hold up the street, just on the off chance that they give pursue, youll get a head-start. They fired running up the dull street, Daimien stumbled over Tim, yet separated from that, it was all going easily. I dialed Leighs number, I could hear the telephone from outside. He replied, Hello. It began to flare and I tossed it at his entryway step. It detonated it seemed like a bomb. He came hurrying out and I gazed into his drab eyes, as he saw his feline attached to the tree. The honest feline gave a powerless yowl as I set it land. I ran down the road towards the others giggling insidiously as they attempted to discover motivation to what we had really done. I heard Leigh shout as I hollered Cmon, get the hellfire outta here. We as a whole begun running towards the school. At the point when we arrived I said as my inhale was returning, Damn, I neglected to place the note in his letter-box. You all return home. Sick polish it off. Sick see all of you at school tomorrow. They all left promptly without saying a thing. I scanned for the note in my back pocket and afterward running as quick I might, I be able to place the note in his storage and started to walk home. As I was strolling home I started to ask myself inquiries I had never truly pondered Why am I such a harasser? What have the individuals I single out ever done to me? What's people's opinion of me? What's my opinion of me? Am I crazy? At that point it appeared to be clear. I was crazy. I started to run home, contemplations were hurrying through my head. I imagined myself shooting many individuals, at that point myself. I could see myself lighting a petroleum bomb and tossing it into a group, consuming individuals for no reason in particular. My head started to turn and I hurried into the house. I recalled that there was a firearm some place in the carport, with loads of ammo. I hustled into the carport and got the firearm out of the second-draw. It was a siphon activity shotgun, close to a snooze sack brimming with ammo all that anyone could need for what I was going to do. I stacked the weapon and tossed the sack on my back and crawled into my folks room. I shot Dad first. My mom sat up and shouted then I shot her dead. Subsequent to having a speedy cigarette, I strolled outside, it was about 11:30pm. A Police vehicle hustled down the road and went to a dramatic end before my home. Somebody more likely than not heard the shots and the shouts and called the Police. I stacked up the firearm and fired straight through the front window of the vehicle. The driver was dead. I shot once more, this time at the other Police official. I smiled and strolled towards the vehicle. .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 , .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 .postImageUrl , .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 .focused content territory { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 , .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0:hover , .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0:visited , .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0:active { border:0!important; } .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u3dd6f5ef22dcdd733920448f764019a0 { show: square; change

These children are being denied their childhood and instead are given a violent and gruesome role to play in brutal conflicts. In addition to this, the majority of child soldiers have transformed their situation in the war into a kind of game, because they are unabl e to fully comprehend or accept the real consequences that war can inflict. In a way, by making the war into a game it is a coping mechanism for these children. Once recruited these children do various tasks, they are not simply used as soldiers in conflict but also do many other duties, such as being; messengers, guards, cooks, mechanics, porters, spies, labors, human shields, human minesweepers, decoys, servants and also sexual slaves. Girls are also recruited, in most cases, they can make up a total of one third of all child soldiers, however in the majority of cases they are not just recruited to be soldier, but to be either raped or to become ‘wives’ to military commanders. Girls who refuse to become ‘wives’ are murdered in front of other girls to make an example of and to make clear that they have no choice in the matter. Provide a reading of Nosferatu and discuss how it established the Vampire sub-genre Essay Example

Provide a reading of Nosferatu and discuss how it established the Vampire sub Provide a reading of Nosferatu and discuss how it established the Vampire sub-genre Paper Provide a reading of Nosferatu and discuss how it established the Vampire sub-genre Paper Essay Topic: Film Nosferatu is a name that conjured fear into the hearts of early filmgoers. A masterpiece of silent film, the strength of this classic and the genre it spawned stands testament to the ability of German Expressionist F. W Murnau. Nosferatu pioneered the Vampire sub-genre of films. It was the first of its ilk, only placed in the genre retrospectively. Countless vampire films, cartoons, sketches, cliches and jokes have appeared over time, each drawing something from the original vampire film none would exist as we know them if it was not for Murnaus silent nightmare. It was Nosferatu that developed many of the generic conventions one has come to expect from a vampire film. Bite-marks, fangs, blood, coffins and gloomy castles lit dimly from the eerie glow of the full moon all feature in Murnaus film. It was Nosferatu which firmly planted these haunting images into the minds of filmmakers to come, each becoming a tired cliche of a very old genre of films. Take, for example, the well-known myth that sun-light will destroy a vampire once-and-for-all. Bram Stokers Dracula (the novel of which Nosferatu was developed from) does not mention sunlight killing a vampire, only reducing its power. Murnau added this concept into his adaptation to which almost all vampire films to follow have copied. However, whilst being the first film of a very popular genre, Nosferatu still retains details which are very different to the films which borrowed from it in future. The most noticeable is the vampires appearance. When one thinks of Vampire they immediately picture the charismatic Bela Lugosi dark lord, oozing sophistication and sex appeal. Nosferatu contains none of this. Count Orlok, the Vampire, is a disgusting animalistic mess of bat-like ears, rodent features, pointy rat-like teeth and a hunched back. Nosferatu moves slowly and painfully, wearing his Undeath as a curse rather than a dark gift. Indeed, the name Nosferatu, by which Orlok is also known, means Plague-Carrier. Count Orlok is free from all the over-done Dracula cliches, this monstrous vampire looking more at home in a sewer than a palatial cheteau in the Carpathians. The story of Nosferatu itself borrows heavily from the Bram Stoker novel Dracula. The two narratives are almost identical, to the point that Stokers daughter tried having all copies of the film destroyed. A classic tale of good versus evil had a simple Equilibrium-Disequilibrium-New Equilibrium storyline. We see Hutter and Ellen happy in their married life until Hutter is drawn into the web of the vampiric Count Orlok, with the Nosferatu preying upon Hutter and his wife. However, the new-equilibrium is not a happy ending. While Orlok dies to the rays of the morning sun, Ellen lays dead having sacrificed herself to destroy the vampire and the plague it brought with him. The film also finished with a low angle shot of Orloks castle does some evil still lurk within? Has the curse of Nosferatu really been destroyed? The film is designed to make people uneasy and even the films resolution leaves the audience feeling unnerved rather than relieved. Murnau was a pioneer of the Expressionist movement. His film rests heavily on mood and theme rather than the character acting. He evokes a feeling of unease through his use of lighting and shadow. He distorts and exaggerates shapes into unrealistic proportions in order to express feelings through the medium of film. For example, the actors wear heavy make up and move jerkily or slowly exaggerated in order to express a mood. The characters do not simply exist within a setting but are visual elements that merge with the setting Murnau tells his story through the entire mise-en-scene rather than his characters each element of this mise-en-scene interacts and combines to create a unique mood and atmosphere. We can see this use of mise-en scene to tell his story throughout the film. Much of the film is shot in shadow, giving a darker more haunting atmosphere to the film coupled with the iris shots, which Murnau made much use of, give a feeling of being trapped that there is no escape from the terror that stalks Ellen and Hutter. Similarly Murnau uses detail in the entire screen, often utilising the corners, which suggest and hidden horrors lurking in the corners. Murnau also makes use of long takes, often of images of death and decay, which causes discomfort in the audience watching. Murnau used more symbolic scenes to express the mood of the film, such as those of spiders and Venus flytraps. Its not only visual elements that add to the creation of the films tone, music too plays its part. Munau called it his Symphony of Terrors a disjointed, discordant and unnerving noise that is not in the least bit tuneful. The music of the film is a very powerful tool in the storytelling of Nosferatu, building up suspense or shocking the audience. Each of the films attributes combine to create distinct ambience that doesnt just tell the story but lets the audience feel the story.

Select an existing company of any size, any location which provides Essay

Select an existing company of any size, any location which provides any product or service - Essay Example Unilever does not sell under its own name, instead uses variety of brand names to create feeling of diversity and local touch. According to Jameson (2007), when the company links business task on hand with the cultural factors of the community where it is going to operate; the chances of positive outcome increases manifold. The several components of the cultural identity can be seen in the working of the company across various geographical boundaries. It takes into account the various cultural traits while forming the various business strategies, marketing campaigns to target their users. The company identifies with different classes of the people in launching its products and communicates clearly that a particular product serves the purpose of a particular class. The company has deep roots in developing countries. An example to be made here is Shakti initiative made by the company in India (HLL Project Shakti†¦). The word Shakti in native language means strength. The purpose wa s to reach rural class under the initiative. Sales women were trained to talk to these rural masses in their local dialect to serve their needs through variety of personal care and home products. Door to door campaign and showing small video to the villagers was their main task. Thus, they got their income by selling the Unilever products. India has wide diversity in cultures and languages. Apart, more than 15 languages are spoken at the state levels and further there are local dialects and it is quite challenging to understand such nitty-gritty of the class and language diversity. The strength of the Unilever lies in meeting those challenges. Shakti initiative is a unique way of dealing with such multicultural class of people forming a large number of linguistic groups across various Indian states. The vastness of this project can be understood from the involvement of numerous Shakti entrepreneurs (HLL Project Shakti†¦) who are operating in thousands of villages meeting the ne eds of nearly 100 million consumers. In fact, the company is communicating to wide cultures, across different linguistic groups in widely spread locations. Such an example of communication cutting across large linguistic groups is hard to find. The Shakti initiative has doubled the reach of Unilever in rural households, which is exemplary in the sense that company’s brands have reached to the difficult terrain of hilly North East States (HLL Project Shakti†¦). In another example, Hindustan Unilever (subsidiary in India) greatly takes care of the buying capacity of its rural class who cannot afford large packaging of the product. The company launched for them shampoo in small one-use sachets that is what people in rural India greatly aspired for as they cannot afford big packing as normally bought by their urban counterparts (Unilever and Emerging†¦). Unilever have mastered the class differentiation while offering the products as it makes Surf Excel for the effluent class; Wheel for the rural folks and for the middle class it is Rin. (Unilever and Emerging†¦) Gender is another crucial aspect as noted by Unilever in marketing its products. Hindustan Lever is forefront in launching schemes empowering women. The company tapped over 45,000 women micro-entrepreneurs and motivated them to

Federal Reserve Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1

Federal Reserve - Essay Example The article argues that even as the Federal Reserve has been in existence since 1913, it wasnt until the 1970s that it assumed as great a control of the American financial system as it has today. The Federal Reserve was created in 1913 by Woodrow Wilson. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries credit was controlled entirely by private banks. Farmers in the mid-western regions grew increasingly upset by this fact, as they complained that oftentimes the banks would alter their credit options at times when the farmers were vulnerable. The Federal Reserve was created as a compromise, with the banks still controlling credit, but the government determining the supply of funds. While the intervening years have seen significant reforms in the way the Federal Reserve operates, its underlining function has remained the same. Private banks are able to borrow from the reserve at a discounted rate, they then loan this money to borrowers at the federal funds rate, or interest rate. As the Federal Reserve raises rates, so must the banks raise the rates of loans. This system is designed to ensure fair and equitable lending throughout the country. The current chairman of the Federal Reserv e, who was recently reappointed in January of 2010, and Alan Greenspan and Paul Volcker preceded him.(Johnson, Web) When the recession hit the Federal Reserve began the process of lowering interests rates to increase consumer spending. At this point, the Fed has virtually lowered the interest rate to 0%. In addition to lowering the interest rate the Fed has engaged in a number of unorthodox methods in an effort to revive the sputtering economy. â€Å"Those techniques include buying vast amounts of longer-term Treasury bonds, mortgage-backed securities issued by government-sponsored companies like Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac and commercial debt issued by private companies and consumer lenders.† (NY Times, Web) In addition to these techniques, the reserve helped in JPMorgans merger with Bear

Second Grade Experience Essay Example for Free

Second Grade Experience Essay During my second year in elementary school, due to the fact that I was doing so horribly in my grades, my parents decided to send me back to El Salvador to bring up my grades. In El Salvador, I lived with my grandma, my cousins, my great aunts and uncles, and most of my family. The schools in El Salvador were so much more different than the schools in America. Since El Salvador is a poor country, the schools couldn’t afford to serve lunch and the houses were much smaller. In America, most kids did not really walk or play outside; they were usually kept locked up in their room, sipping on juice and watching tv. But the kids in El Salvador; they knew how to live their life with meaning. Every single day, as I made more and more friends, I would go to the soccer field and play games outside. We would play tag, soccer, baseball, soft ball; pretty much any kind of sport you could imagine. The soccer fields in El Salvador were the place where I, eventually, learned to play softball. Softball is like baseball but is usually referred to as, â€Å"baseball but for girls. † After learning how to play softball, I decided to join a small softball team that was formed in my second grade class of elementary school. Being on that team, allowed me to be at the fields even more and taught me to love the sport. The idea of fresh air, blue skies, grass stains, balls, and bats made me excited and energetic. Every time I hit the ball with my bat, I ran as fast as my legs could take me, striving to reach the home plate and score a point for my team. Running on the fields all day and hanging out with friends, giggling at our innocent, naive quirks and remarks gave my childhood, memories of freedom and promise. I now look at life like a baseball diamond; you just have to hit the ball and keep running until you finally reach home plate and win.

Edgar Allan Poe - Mr. Pessimistic Essay -- Biography Biographies

Edgar Allan Poe - Mr. Pessimistic Some people always look at the bad side of things instead of the good side. This is called pessimism. Edgar Allan Poe could be recognized as the king of pessimism. He is known for his tales of the mysterious and macabre. His dark and twisted works are filled with pessimism. Poe was a person who had faced many troubling experiences throughout his life. To escape from his saddened world, Poe drank and wrote short stories and poems with a pessimistic outlook. Being a pessimist is what made Poe such a great and creative writer. He brought out his dark side in his work. It seems that all of his stories and poems are laced with pessimism. Pessimism was like Poe’s warm blanket. He had a sad life, which definitely contributed to his writing. Poe’s poem â€Å"The Raven† greatly reflects his own life and his feelings after the death of his wife Virginia. Of Poe’s entire life "The Raven" is said to be Poe’s best-known and written work. It is about a lover lamenting his dead mistress. It makes it clear that the death of a beautiful woman was for him the supremely interesting subject, and that the most appropriate tone of a poem is melancholy, and certainly there can be no subject more melancholy than the loss of beauty through death (Minor 2244). The autobiographical element in this poem can be noticed. As a young child Poe’s father abandoned them and he lost his mother. John and Fanny Allan took him home, but they did not formally adopt him (Qrisse). J...

Is Bollywood Shining in Asia? Introduction As Smith, a columnist for Articlemyriad, mentioned, â€Å"Far from being mere entertainment, though, the Bollywood movies represent a powerful means of self- and community expression which Indians are using to define themselves in front of the rest of the world,† (Smith) Exploring the Bollywood movie and its emergency in Asia is an effective way to see whether India has some common culture elements with other Asian countries and whether they are integrating under the impulsion of culture.Dudrah (2006) mentioned in his book Bollywood: Sociology Goes to the Movies, â€Å"Bollywood, the moniker for popular Hindi cinema from Mumbai, India, has become an important catchword in the vocabulary of global South Asian popular culture. † (Dudrah, 2006) It demonstrates that Indian culture dominates in South Asia. However, with the success Three Idiots achieved in Asia, some people began to consider the situation of Bollywood in Asia. Bolly wood is a real buzz word at the moment,† said Vinay Virmani, writer and actor of Breakaway, in an interview, â€Å"I think that's because Bollywood has been able to translate beyond the whole south Asian community. † (Mahmood & Mitra, 2011)This opinion is true but maybe too simple as he just considered about the popularity. The opinion I want to argue in this paper is that although Bollywood movies become popular in Asia, the commercial profit they gained is still limited.Maybe Three Idiots, the most successful Bollywood movie in recent years, is the best representative of Bollywood movies which are facing such an embarrassing situation. â€Å"Have you seen the Three Idiots second time? † It may be the first reaction when Hong Kong people talked about this famous Indian movie. It is amazing that a Bollywood movie gained such huge success in Hong Kong. In fact, Three Idiots has run for 13 weeks since it was released in Hong Kong in September, 2011. It broke the sp ell that â€Å"Normally, a Bollywood Film in China and Hong Kong would run in select multiplexes for 1 to 2 weeks. (3 Idiots Rocks in China & Hong Kong, 2011)Although it gained high praise in Hong Kong and other Asia countries, the box-office contributed by Asian countries was still limited. According to the statistics from Box Office Mojo, 60. 8% box-office of Three Idiots came from India (3 IDIOTS box office, 2011) and it was released in only six other Asia countries (or areas), which are Hong Kong, Malaysia, South Korea, Singapore, Indonesia and Taiwan. (3 Idiots) Why Bollywood becomes popular in Asia ) Thanks to Slumdog Millionaire Slumdog Millionaire tells a story happened in Indian slums. It is made by Hollywood but full of Bollywood characters, which made many audiences mistake it for a Bollywood movie. As it won the top prize at the Academy Awards and eight Oscars in total including best director and best picture, (The Oscars 2009, 2009) it appealed to more audiences, espec ially Asians, who regard the Academy Prize as the highest honor of a movie. It took $2,280,068 in its first week in China and $930,097 in Hong Kong. SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE-box office, 2009) With the influence of Slumdog Millionaire, people would like to see Bollywood movies with huge interest and curiousness. Bollywood movie become a hit to Asian audiences. 2) A mirror of the issues faced by Asia It is obvious to see the changes in Bollywood movies when comparing those new successful movies with the old ones. The traditional stories about revenge or the love between a rich woman and a penniless man have already been out of date. New Bollywood movies focus more on the modern issues faced by many other Asian countries as well. The issues always mentioned are never leaving ethnic and religious conflicts, gap between the rich and poor and education. For instance, the Three Idiots mentioned before exposed the education problems existing in many Asian countries. The film is about three studen ts who do not fit the traditional and inflexible education method in Indian Institutes of Technology and are considered as idiots by professors. â€Å"However, the movie clearly shows who the three real idiots are – the educational system, the teachers and the parents†, Sudhakar RAM said. Ram, 2010) The performance-oriented system, faculty-led pedagogy and arbitrary parents criticized in this movie exist not only in India, but also other Asian states. In South Korea, academic achievements are regarded as the decisive factor for social success. Only the students getting into prestigious universities can guarantee their social success, while students with other abilities are unrecognized. (Suicide Figures Point to Failure of Education System, 2011) The same phenomena existed in Mainland China. In order to enter a famous university, students pursue higher exam marks rather than knowledge. Teaching methodology basically consists of force-feeding copious amounts of required information directly out of textbooks (often teachers will simply read directly from the text) and students are discouraged from asking questions, particularly if those questions challenge ideology or anything regarded as factual. † (Middle Kingdom Life) As this movies shows the familiar and real problems to Asian audience, people are able to understand the movie better and easily accept it, just as Zoher Abdoolcarim said, â€Å"They laughed when they were meant to and didn't when they weren't. (Abdoolcarim, 2011) In addition, Asia, as a growing power, is eager to get the approval from the world. India, with fast development in economy, has more aspiration and shows it by movies. There is a popular Bollywood movie among Asian audience called My Name Is Khan. It tells a story about how a Muslim man called Khan, in order to get forgiveness from his wife, overcame many difficulties to tell American President that his name had no relationship with terrorists. Although it seems l ike a love movie, what it shows indeed is the â€Å"questions of religious and national identity†. My Name is Khan – Movie Review, 2010) Asian states, like the Muslim, undergo untold hardships to develop, hoping to get the approval from the world. The emotion and sprit—national identifying—expressed in Bollywood movies reflect the psychology of Asia and fit the taste of Asians. 3) The attracting modern music Dance and songs are the symbols of Bollywood movies. â€Å"A Bollywood movie is incomplete without songs and dance in it. † (Role of dance Choreographer in Bollywood movie songs, 2011) However, young people in Asia seem not interested in the traditional dance and songs in Bollywood movies. Therefore, the Bollywood music changed among with the transformation in movies. It mixed the traditional songs with western elements to produce a new style that appeals international audience, of course, including Asians, rather than the pure classical Indian music that appeals to Indians only. Campus songs which never appeared now become popular in Bollywood movies. ‘Aal Izz Well' in Three Idiots has oodles of youth feeling, which brings audience back to their college days. 4) With the help of InternetAlthough playing full-length movie on internet is illegal in some countries, there are no strict restrictions in some Asia countries, like China, which provides audience a chance to watch Bollywood movies through internet. Three Idiots, for example, will be released in December, 2011 in Mainland China. However, the discussion of this movie in Internet lasted for a long time and it even got 8. 9 marks by 19,096 people marking in the Mtime, a websites regarded as Chinese IMDB. Three Idiots) This phenomenon benefits from the Chinese video-sharing websites, such as Tudou and Youku. In fact, this movie was played up to 1,824,335 times only in Tudou (Three Idiots). The same is Devads, which is marked 8. 4 in Mtime (Devdas) and played 279,4 69 times in Tudou. (Devdas) The force of internet cannot be overlooked in popularizing Bollywood movies. Why Bollywood movies have a little profit? As the statistics from Box Office Mojo show, most Bollywood movies are released in four other Asia areas mainly —Malaysia, South Korea, Taiwan and Hong Kong.Although Bollywood movies have satisfied box-offices in these areas, the profit they gained in other Asian areas was still low compared to domestic market. The reason may be that Bollywood movies don’t squeeze into the two main markets in Asia—China and Japan because of the strict movie importing restrictions. China has strict import restrictions that limit the number of foreign blockbusters to 20 per year. â€Å"Film imports are still controlled by the state-owned China Film Group. † (Lee, 2011) And in Japan, the situation is even worse. â€Å"But selecting films for release in Japan is not easy. , said Aki Sugihara, general manager at licensing and acqu isition department of Nikkatsu Corp, â€Å"The rights for ‘3 Idiots' had been sold to every Asian country except Japan. † (IANS, 2011) The closing of the two main Asian movie markets makes the profit Bollywood movies gain limit in Asia. Tendency 1) The wall will come down With the globalization, the trade wall is decreasing, including the movie import policies. Taiwan is a case in point, who revised the Motion Picture law–dropping its film import restrictions—–to meet WTO demand in 2001.Many Bollywood movies, which are not released in Mainland China and Hong Kong, can be found on Taiwan screens, like Om Shanti Om and Taare Zameen Par. Taiwan is just a start as its policy influences other countries. The success of Three Idiots in Taiwan spirited South Korea to release it, according to a Korean industry office. (Bhat, 2011) The prospect in Mainland China is also bright. Thanks to the efforts of India's Ministry of External Affairs, India got a quota o f four out of the 20 imported movies per year. Baru, 2010)What’s more, as the deadline given by the World Trade Organization when China end its movie import restrictions is 19 March 2011, China is expected to raise the import quota to 30 films this year and a little more each year subsequently. (Jaffe, 2011) It is inspiring news for not only Bollywood but also the world, which can also be regarded as a symbol that the free and open movie market is a tendency in such a global world. 2) The cooperation can be realized Bollywood is exporting its movies to more countries by cooperating with foreign companies to produce movies. My Name is Khan, a Bollywood movie produced and marketed by Fox Star Studios, gained $38,326,589 in oversea market. (My Name Is Khan) It pointed out a new way for Bollywood to gain profit in Asia, which is cooperating with Asian companies. In fact, the Chinese government's official film production company has cooperated with Bollywood to make a movie called Gold Struck. â€Å"Since the film is being supported by China-based production companies, it will not be considered a foreign import and will fall outside the censorship restrictions that have impeded Bollywood's entry into the China market,† Cindy Shyu, CEO of Lighthouse Productions said. Krishnan, 2010) Also Aki Sugihara from Japan mentioned, â€Å"If our co-production expands, there will be a chance of getting into co-production with Indian films. † (IANS, 2011) By cooperation, Bollywood may knock at the door of China and Japan, and enter into these two huge Asian markets step by step. Conclusion Bollywood, which used to be regarded as â€Å"a factory of dances and songs†, is no longer what it was. In a global world, Bollywood is also expanding its influence power to Asia, even to the world. Going by the success of Slumdog Millionaire, Bollywood began to export its movies with a new image. It changes the style of dance and songs and pays more attention to the contents of movies, which expose the same issues Asians face and inspire emotional resonance. In addition, the internet popularizing also promotes the spread of Bollywood movies. However, Bollywood has fame but little profit in Asia because of the strict restrictions, especially in China and Japan. In another word, Bollywood’s emergence has already beyond South Asia but the true commercial success is still limited to domestic market.Although it seems that Bollywood has loss in Asia in terms of commerce from current movie market state, we cannot deny that Bollywood movies have potential to win because of the falling-down restrictions and the tiny cooperation with Asian movie companies. Bollywood is not shining in Asia now, but the time for it to shine is not far away. Reference SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE-box office. (2009, 12 20).
